The Big Things

Today’s devotional reading came from 1 Kings 18:39, where the primary thought was “Truly God.”

When I do my devotional, I look for the whole story, so I naturally read the entire chapter.  This chapter is one of my favorite parts of the histories/prophet areas of Scripture.  It is the story of one man, Elijah, facing down 850 false prophets of Baal and Asherah.  Why do I like it?  It’s one man, a chosen man of God, standing against a ton of enemies so His people can return to Him..

If you read the whole story, however, you will see something we are all guilty of in there.  It took a giant display from God for the people to turn to Him again.  This got me wondering, do I do that?  The answer is, sometimes, yes.

It is unfortunately part of the human condition for those that walk with Him.  We get tired, we get scared, we just get completely frustrated with what seems like pile after pile after pile being placed on our shoulders, that we forget, He is truly God.  You see, prior to this, Israel had allowed themselves to be deceived and led away from God.  But that is not the focus here.

My focus here today is this, don’t look at the big things that you get blessed with as the sign of God’s sovereignty in your life.  Look at everything, big and small.  Everything from that get well card you receive in the mail that gives you encouragement to the miscalculation in bills that gives you a little bit of a boon at the end of the month.

Now don’t think this means to just look at the good.  Sometimes, you have to look at the bad as well, little and big, because even those things are meant for our own good.  What good you may ask?  To get us closer to Him and there is no greater good than that.

So always keep in mind, good or bad, big or small, remember, at the end of the day, He is truly God.
